  4. Book Review: Hunting: In Search of the Wild Life, Edited by Nathan Kowalsky

    Sustainablog &bull Sep 1, 2010

Wiley-Blackwell's series of philosophy books for general readers, Philosophy for Everyone, aims to serve general, non-expert readers without actually treating them as "dummies" or creating watered-down, one-size-fits-all philosophy. The risk such an endeavor always faces is to end up serving nobody while trying to serve everybody, failing to satisfy either the experts or the neophytes. In the anthology Hunting: In Search of the Wild Life (affiliate link), editor Nathan Kowalsky brings together an impressive list of both heavyweights and lightweights from philosophical academia, as well as writers from other fields, many (okay, most) of them being active hunters. The goal:… Full Story »

A good sun light is that balanced between the amount of light and reflections, which illuminates the earth equal to that released from the earth. If the amount of heat which go into the earth and reflected back into the sky as much, then the earth remains healthy and eligible for humans. 8. Running with a conscience: food and drink

    Marc Gunther &bull Aug 31, 2010

This is third guest post on eco-friendly running from Melissa Schweisguth. (Here's the first, on clothing and shoes, and the second, about racing, training and tech.) I'm featuring Melissa's post because running and the environment are two of my passions, and she's done a beautiful job of marrying the two. Melissa is a 36-year-old fellow sustainability professional and writer who also enjoys running. She puts me to shame, and not just because she clocked an impressive 3:11:07 in the Eugene (Oregon) Marathon this year. Melissa hasn't thrown anything into a landfill since 2006, which earned her notice in Time magazine… Full Story »

  9. A Fragrance without the Fragrance: Organic Perfume Review

    Ecosalon &bull Aug 30, 2010

Do you sprint through department stores? I do, and it's always through the makeup section. I have bad allergies and walking through rows and rows of fragrances is akin to demons waving perfumed-drenched pitchforks at me. Fragrance means an instant headache, sniffling nose, and a possible asthma attack. To me, perfume is utterly toxic. To everyone else? Yeah, actually it looks like it is toxic… Full Story »

  13. Running with a conscience

    Marc Gunther &bull Aug 29, 2010

Two of my passions are running and the environment. I do my best to marry them: I've recycled my old running shoes. I currently run in Vibram FiveFinger "barefoot" shoes, which are light weight and last a long time. I mix my own Gatorade from a 3 lb. But I also use high tech equipment (Garmin GPS, Monster headphones, iPod shuffle), own dozens of T-shirts from races that are stuffed in a closet and drive 2-3 miles most days just to get to the place where I start my run. Over the years I've flown to marathons in Chicago, San… Full Story »

  17. Britain's Environment Agency: Go Vegetarian to Stop Climate Change

    www.commondreams.org via @Feferang  &bull Aug 27, 2010

I'm tempted to move to Britain, and not just because I saw an early screening of Michael Moore's amazing new movie, Sicko (go see it; tell all your friends). What got me is that an official with the UK's Environment Agency has acknowledged that humans can significantly help stop global warming by adopting a vegetarian diet. Of course, the science could not be more clear. When U.N. scientists looked at all the evidence, they declared in a 408-page report titled Livestock's Long Shadow that raising animals for food… Full Story »
