New green economics.
Claimants Action South Wales &bull Feb 20, 2010New green economics.Friday 05 February 2010 Alan Simpson Whatever connects the controversy about how fast the glaciers are melting with the results of the latest British Social Attitudes Survey, it certainly isn't the latest Tory campaign poster "We can't go on like this" that links all three in confusion and insecurity. The British public have - rightly - become far more accepting of homosexuality and co-habitation rather than marriage. Caricatures that once presented these as a threat to the very fabric of society have largely melted away. We are beginning to see that what undermines society and relationships is a… Full Story »

Aguanomics: Future of Irrigated Agriculture pt2
Aguanomics &bull Feb 20, 2010Lower Tule River Irrigation District applies water in perhaps a "wasteful" manner. But what he showed was that Pixley Irrigation District next door pumps heavily from the aquifer that the two districts share, and pumps most heavily near the border. So while making LTRID more efficient may seem like a good idea, in this case basin wide efficiency is higher than field level efficiency because PID reuses LTRIDs percolation. I have learned recently that LTRID… Full Story »

Aloha Analytics: A New Electric Utility Paradigm
Aloha Analytics &bull Feb 20, 2010Focus on realistic energy and resource issues, local to global. Have an eye in this area for spotting trends and zeroing in on controlling, good information. Electric utilities operate now much as they did a century agobut the environment in which they operate is changing dramatically. Now more than ever before, utilities whose regulators reward them in the traditional way for selling more electricity risk losing revenue as customers use their electricity more efficiently. Climate change and energy security concerns, coupled with advances in disruptive technologies, may make conventional power-generating assets uncompetitive to build or even to run. Potential competitors… Full Story »

Cotton Gin
Textile Technology Spinning &bull Feb 20, 2010Cotton fibers must be separated from the seed (ginned) before they can be used to manufacture textile goods. The first machine to gin cotton was the Churka gin. The Churka gin was most efficient when handling naked seeded varieties with loosely attached fibers. Early American settlers found that the fuzzy seeded varieties that yielded best in this country were difficult to gin on a roller gin. Consequently, the fiber was generally pulled from the seed (ginned) by hand until Eli Whitney patented his gin in 1794. Whitney's gin used spikes on a hand-driven cylinder to remove fibers from the seed.… Full Story »

After Life ArchitectureBoston
ArchitectureBoston &bull Feb 20, 2010When F. Scott Fitzgerald famously declared that ?there are no second acts in American life,? it may still have been largely true ? at least with regard to the built environment. The remark is attributed to notes Fitzgerald made while working on his unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon, in the 1930s. And at that time, the United States was still plowing westward. There was enough frontier spirit left to keep Americans from dwelling too much on the past, when there was still so much of the country left to be settled. After the long deprivations of World War II, and… Full Story »

Two Ridiculously Simple Ways to Catapult Your Energy Levels
My Efficient Planet &bull Feb 20, 2010As a health researcher and health activist, as well as the host of the T.V. show Balanced Health, I get hundreds of questions from people every month. Not surprisingly, the most common question I get is How can I have more energy? It is the biggest outcry of the adult generation I WANT MORE ENERGY! That is understandable. Many infomercials have approached the subject. So have the pharmaceutical industry, designer coffee chains and specialty drink companies. Websters defines energy as the capacity of doing work. Energy can be obtained externally or produced internally. Energy from the outside, or external energy,… Full Story »
