Glacier melting a key clue to tracking climate change
www.reuters.com via @MasonSpeak &bull Mar 4, 2010Like many low-altitude glaciers, it's steadily melting, shrinking two miles over the past 200 years as it tries to strike a new balance with rising temperatures. At the Kenai Fjords National Park south of Anchorage, managers have learned to follow the Exit and other glaciers, moving signs and paths to accommodate the ephemeral rivers of blue and white ice as they retreat up deeply carved valleys. Some of the stuff is changing fast enough that we now have signs on moving pedestals," said Fritz Klasner, natural resource specialist at Kenai Fjords. The vast amounts of water stored in glaciers play… Full Story »

The Daily Cougar
The Daily Cougar &bull Feb 20, 2010The scientists in Antarctica working on a project, including a UH student and faculty, collected mud in search of sediments in steel boxes called kasten cores. They dropped the box into seawater and brought it back up on the ship for examination. When the ice shelf of the Antarctic Peninsula broke up in 2002, it provided an opportunity to study the physical and biological environment of the former ice shelf. Earth science major Yuribia Munoz was invited by UHs… Full Story »

CoolPictureGallery : Cryosphere:Earth's Icy Extremes Seen From Space
☆ CoolPictureGallery ☆ &bull Feb 19, 2010Floating sea ice covers about 11 million square miles of Earths oceans in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. It plays an important role in regulating climate and is critical for many animals. Glaciers and Ice sheets cover around 10 percent of the land area on Earth. Every continent except Australia is partially covered in ice.Despite its extent and importance, the nature of the cryosphere makes it difficult to visit, study and understand. Because of the remote and harsh conditions throughout most of the polar regions, scientists who study them often have to rely on data collected from space for research. The… Full Story »

IPCC Errors: Fact and Spin
Solve Climate Chronicles &bull Feb 18, 2010
Currently, a few errors - and supposed errors - in the last IPCC report (AR4) are making the media rounds, together with a lot of distortion and professional spin by parties interested in discrediting climate science. Time for us to sort the wheat from the chaff: which of these putative errors are real, and which not? And what does it all mean, for the IPCC in particular, and for climate science more broadly? Let's start with a few basic facts about the IPCC. The IPCC is not, as many people seem to think, a large organization. In fact, it has… Full Story »
